I have decided to start using St Louis Public Library almost exclusively. We have typically used the St Louis County Library, but the libraries are further away, and (having limited transportation availability) it simply takes longer to get to them. This, of course, impacts the accumulation of library fines and the frequency with which our visits occur. Planning nearly an hour of travel time is simply not feasible for weekly trips. So, yesterday we went to one of the city libraries- the Kingshighway branch- which happens to be right around the corner (or two) from our house. Besides having a really good time, we enjoyed not having to be in the car for so long! I also discovered that I can reserve books online from any of the city libraries and pick them up at any library I choose. VERY convenient.
So here is what we accomplished today:
Reading Selections:
Genesis 15
Robin Redbreast, by William Allingham
"How the Whale Got His Throat" from Just So Stories by Rudyard Kipling
"The Leap at Rhodes," an Aesop Fable
The Little House by Virginia Burton
Nature Study:
We looked at photos of marine mammals in the oversize book, Spirit of the Polar Regions
Spanish:
We played chalupa, a spanish bingo game
Phonics and Copywork:
Both girls read words from Alpha Phonics- Lesson 18. We discussed the importance of reading practice.
For copywork Brisa practiced spelling her name and started the first lesson in McGuffey's Reader.
Kahmylia completed her copywork of Ephesians 6:1.
Reading Practice:
We are using selections from Harriette Taylor Treadwell's Primer and First Reader
Kahmylia finished "The Three Little Pigs." I gave her a bookmark to put under each line as she reads. This helped her ability to keep her place tremendously. She is still making up words a lot, so we will have to work on that.
Brisa read "The Gingerbread Boy." I am genuinely surprised at her enthusiasm for reading. She has never wanted to try before. It seems that the success she is having is fueling her fire.
Narration:
Brisa narrated "How the Whale Got His Throat."
Kahmylia narrated The Little House
Math:
Kahmylia continues to work on addition of numerals to the tens' place.
Brisa is working on addition and subtraction facts to 10.
